Affordable Used Cars: How Mileage and Service History Matter

Learn how mileage, service history, inspections, and RoRo or container shipping affect used vehicle exports from China to West Africa.

Affordable Used Cars: How Mileage and Service History Matter

Mileage is a starting point, not a complete quality rating. In affordable used car sales, a vehicle with documented servicing and moderate use may be a safer export purchase than a lower-mileage unit with unclear history.

How condition is graded

Export assessments normally separate cosmetic condition from mechanical health. Exterior grading records paint marks, dents, panel alignment, glass, lights, tyres, and signs of accident repair. Interior checks cover seat wear, trim, windows, climate control, infotainment, and warning lamps. Mileage should be matched against the odometer, VIN records, service invoices, inspection photos, and the vehicle’s operating history. A practical grading band might distinguish low, medium, and high mileage, but the band alone does not prove condition.

Mechanical inspection includes cold starting, road testing, transmission response, braking, steering, suspension noise, fluid leaks, underbody damage, and diagnostic scans. For the BYD Atto 3, battery state of health, charging operation, cable condition, and fault codes require separate attention. A Chery Tiggo 7 Plus, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Geely Coolray, or Haval H6 also needs checks for engine temperature, turbo operation where fitted, and maintenance intervals. “Export-grade” or “dealer-grade” should mean that these findings are recorded, not that defects are impossible. Buyers should request the VIN, dated photos, scan results, service documents, and an independent inspection where practical. Flood damage, uneven panel gaps, fresh underseal, mismatched tyres, persistent warning lights, and unusually clean engine bays are red flags.

Shipping from China to West Africa

After approval, the exporter arranges export licensing, customs declaration, pre-shipment inspection, and shipping documents. RoRo usually suits a running vehicle that can be driven onto the vessel. It can reduce handling and often costs less, but personal items are restricted and the vehicle remains exposed during port handling. Containers offer more protection from weather and allow approved shared loading, yet loading dimensions, securing points, and container availability affect the cost. Freight rates depend on vehicle size, sailing schedule, origin handling, destination port, fuel and seasonal charges, and whether the shipment is RoRo or containerised. Transit to West African ports commonly takes several weeks, with schedules changing after booking. Marine insurance should be considered, especially where the sales terms place transit risk with the buyer. The bill of lading records the shipment and is needed for cargo release. At destination, the consignee or clearing agent handles arrival notices, port storage, customs clearance, local taxes, inspection requirements, and collection. Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania apply different rules for drive side, vehicle age, emissions, roadworthiness, and EV imports. Most Chinese domestic vehicles are left-hand drive, so destination eligibility must be confirmed before payment.

FAQ

Q: Does low mileage guarantee a better export vehicle? A: No. Mileage must be checked against service records, VIN information, inspection results, and wear on the cabin and controls. A well-maintained higher-mileage vehicle may present fewer risks than one with an incomplete history.

Q: Which shipping method is safer, RoRo or container? A: Container shipping generally provides more protection from weather and handling contact, but loading and securing must be done correctly. RoRo is practical for running vehicles and may cost less, while marine insurance remains important with either method.
