Which Second Hand Car Is Best for Low Maintenance Costs?

Low maintenance is a parts-supply question, not an engineering one. Which used Chinese models are cheapest to keep running in Ghana and Nigeria, and why.

Which Second Hand Car Is Best for Low Maintenance Costs?

“Reliable” and “cheap to maintain” get used as if they were the same property. In West Africa they come apart quickly, and the difference decides which cars make money for your buyers.

A reliable car breaks rarely. A cheap-to-maintain car is one whose parts sit on a shelf within driving distance. A car that breaks once a year but waits three weeks for a part is worse for a taxi driver than a car that breaks twice a year and is back on the road in two days.

Maintenance cost is mostly a supply question

Break down what a buyer actually pays over three years of hard use:

Routine wear items. Brake pads, filters, belts, bushes, shock absorbers. Frequency is set by road quality, not by brand. Everyone pays this.

Consumable failures. Sensors, alternators, radiators, air-con compressors. Here brand matters — not because one engineering team is better, but because volume determines whether the part is stocked locally or ordered from abroad.

Labour familiarity. A mechanic who has opened this engine before diagnoses in an hour. One who has not charges for the learning.

Two of those three are volume effects. That is why sales history predicts maintenance cost better than any reliability rating.

The Haval H6 is the answer if maintenance cost is the deciding criterion. Four million-plus units sold means faults are documented, forums exist, independent parts supply exists, and mechanics have seen it. It scores mid-table on ground clearance at 180 mm and wins outright on the thing this article is about.

The two Chery SUVs share components, which is a quiet advantage. A workshop that stocks for the Tiggo 7 PLUS is part-way to stocking for the Tiggo 8 Pro. If you sell both, your buyers benefit from the same local inventory.

The Atto 3 is a different maintenance model entirely. Fewer moving parts and no oil services, but battery and high-voltage work requires trained labour and equipment that is still thin outside major cities. Lower routine cost, higher variance.

The gearbox, said plainly

The DCT gearbox is the recurring weak point across the Chery and Haval range. It behaves well when its fluid service has been done on schedule and becomes expensive when it has not.

This is why we inspect gearbox behaviour under load on every unit rather than only reading a service book, and why the third-party report states what was observed. A DCT with a documented service history is a fine buy. A DCT with an unknown history is a gamble whose downside is a four-figure repair.

Tell your buyer this before the sale. The service interval is the difference between a good ownership experience and a grievance, and they can only act on information they were given.

What low maintenance is worth in cash

For a ride-hailing driver, a car off the road costs daily income, not just repair money. Three weeks waiting for a part can exceed the part’s price several times over.

That is the argument for the Coolray too, from a different direction: 6–7 L/100 km on Accra or Lagos tarmac is a weekly saving that compounds across a year of commercial driving. Fuel is a maintenance cost in everything but name.

Common questions

Q: Which used Chinese car is cheapest to maintain? A: The Haval H6, because volume drives parts availability and mechanic familiarity. Reliability in practice is largely a parts question.

Q: Are Chinese cars expensive to keep running compared with Toyota? A: Service networks are real but thinner than Toyota’s. Routine wear items are comparable; unusual parts may need ordering. Set that expectation with buyers upfront.

Q: Is an electric car cheaper to maintain? A: On routine servicing, yes. On anything involving the battery or high-voltage system, it depends entirely on whether trained labour is reachable.

Q: How do I verify a gearbox before buying? A: Have it tested under load, not just at idle, and insist the inspection report states what was observed. A service history without a road test is incomplete evidence.
